Why is PA eMentoring Important for Teachers?
A challenge we all face as educators is student motivation and how to make curriculum relevant and “real” to kids.
One-on-one mentoring is one solution that has shown to have dramatic impact on young persons. Career education is another.
Both, however, are often difficult to accomplish, especially in a classroom setting.
PA eMentoring combines the best of one-on-one mentoring and career education -- using the Internet to deliver a mentor and a comprehensive career education curriculum to the student’s desktop computer.
As educators we face the challenge of assuring that students are prepared for their post-secondary success. PA eMentoring does this by giving students a broader awareness of post-secondary college and career opportunities. Students are receptive because key messages about colleges and careers come from working professionals.
As a result of participating students receive career knowledge, gain self-awareness and better self esteem, and are prompted for professionalism in their written communication leading to better writing skills.
For you, the educator, PA eMentoring allows you to introduce a comprehensive career curriculum built around the PA Academic Standards for Career Education and Work into your classroom. The program is implemented within an existing class, taking about 40 minutes per week of class time, and lasting for 10-12 weeks. The program allows you to involve parents and the student's work is easily monitored and graded.
Your role is to introduce all career activity topics and encourage students to email mentors on a regular basis (a minimum of once per week). You may monitor all incoming and outgoing emails and students are able to print the results of each of their 10 career activities and submit them for grading.
PA eMentoring is safe. Each mentor is individually screened and receives ACT 34/151 Clearances. All emails are filtered and stored for review.
Best of all, each student receives a personalized Career and College Profile based on the work they did with their mentor through completing the online curriculum.
